Tesla introduces ‘Cabin overheat protection’

In the latest update to the Telsa vehicle Software, version 8.0 kicks off a significant over-the-air overhaul of the Tesla touchscreen.

This release combines upgrades to the modern interface accessed via the central 17inch screen with a more intuitive Media Player with display improvements for Maps, Autopilot and voice commands.

In an industry-first, Tesla also introduces Cabin Overheat Protection, a safety feature focused on children and pets.

The feature maintains a safe temperature in cabin even when the car is off.  According to the RSPCA, reporting on the death of dogs in cars during hot spells, a car interior can reach an unbearable 47 degrees within an hour when the outside temperature is only 22 degrees.

Cabin overheat protection is made possible made possible by tapping into the large battery packs to keep the onboard ventilation systems running.

Elon Musk, the Head of Tesla commented on Twitter:

“My favorite new feature is the always-on max temp control for keeping kids and pets safe from overheating.

Tesla keeps temp below 40C/105F by automatically venting cabin & turning on AC when needed. Can do this for up to a year on a full charge.”

Elon also mentioning the feature disables when the remaining charge reaches 20%, although this value is configurable.
