VW I.D. BUZZ electric microbus to make production in 2022

The I.D. BUZZ concept electric car from Volkswagen has been given the green light for production as a result of positive feedback.

The decision was announced today at the Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach, California, a unique show for both extraordinary historic cars and new concept vehicles.

VW boss Herbert Diess explained about the choice of venue:

“Just the right place for the I.D. BUZZ. The vehicle is an important pillar in Volkswagen’s electric drive initiative and carries the Microbus driving feeling into the future.

The Microbus, which is what the Bulli is called in America, has always been part of the California lifestyle. Now we’re bringing it back by developing Volkswagen’s next e-generation and by reinventing the Bulli as an electric vehicle.”

Volkswagen has also set a launch date of 2022 for the I.D. BUZZ, which will arrive at dealerships after the compact four-door I.D. model in 2020. Volkswagen is mainly targeting the markets in North America, Europe and China with both the I.D. BUZZ and the I.D. family overall.

“After the presentations at the global motor shows in Detroit and Geneva, we received a large number of letters and emails from customers who said, ‘please build this car'”

The event also brought the news that the BUZZ would also be available as van.

“Along with a minibus version, we’ll also be offering an I.D. BUZZ Cargo variant for zero-emission delivery operations in a Level 3 vehicle that boasts a high degree of automated driving capability.

It’s an ideal electric van concept, particularly for inner cities.”

said Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles CEO Dr Eckhard Scholz.

When the striking vehicle arrived at Detroit in January Volkswagen described it as “The new era of electric mobility” bringing along with it a nostalgic, warm fuzzy feeling that the brand has someone missed in recent years.

Many other ‘microbus’ concepts have come and gone over the years, namely the Bulli and most recently the BUDD-e.

Equipping the BUZZ with a zero emission all-wheel drive system with output power of 275 kW / 374 PS (electric motors front and rear each delivering 150 kW) is the perfect match for the car’s dynamic character.

The concept version of the I.D. BUZZ reaches 60mph in 5 seconds; its top speed is restricted to 100mph.The use of space in the concept car, which has up to eight seats, is better than in any other electric vehicle with multi-variable seating like that seen in the latest Type 6 People Carrier.

Thanks to the extended MEB XL platform, this 4,942 mm long, 1,976 mm wide and 1,963 mm high concept vehicle provides what for its class are extraordinary spatial dimensions inside as well.

At 3,300 mm, it has an extremely long wheelbase. Located in between the vehicle floor is the battery. It lowers the centre of gravity and ensures perfect weight distribution. The suspension of the I.D. BUZZ, with its electronically regulated shock absorbers, additionally ensures top-class comfort.
