The Renault ZOE e-sport concept, which packs nearly 460 bhp from its two electric motors, has certainly created masses of new interest in electric cars. Revealed at the Geneva Motorshow back in March, the e-sport concept takes the fun all electric city car and creates the first ever electric hot hatch – that might just make production.
Patrice Ratti, the head of the French car makers sport division, told UK’s Autocar Magazine that they are investigating the possibility:
“We are thinking about doing a Zoe RS but it is a big study that will take time. The performance of batteries has improved [to the point] that it is now feasible, which certainly wasn’t the case a few years ago. So the studies have begun.”
The concept is constructed from Carbon Fibre bringing weight down to just 1,400kg and sits on diamond cut 20 inch alloy wheels. The two electric motors pack 640nm of torque meaning 60mph arrives in just in 3.2 seconds, that’s Tesla challenging.
As with most concepts, the production car will likely to be tamed down to keep production costs in check. Expect the carbon construction to go, but more power is certainly feasible. The current Renault ZOE, with its updated Z.E. 40 battery pack is an entertaining drive with a chassis capable of handling much more power, yet feel held back to maximise range.
Could we see an electric hot hatch soon? I for one truly hope so.
