Could an electric Twingo be Renault’s “EV Surprise” at the Geneva Show?

The countdown has begun to the annual Geneva Motor Show where Renault have a shared a press invite encouraging visitors to come and see their revised models.

In this statement they teased about an ‘EV surprise’.  My thoughts are this additional model is likely to be an electric version of the cute five door city car, the Twingo. This follows neatly on from the launch of its sibling, the smart forfour Electric Drive – with the two cars sharing the same platform and drivetrain.

The smart Electric is equipped with a 60 kW (81 hp) electric motor mounted at the rear with powerful torque of 160 Nm on tap immediately from a standstill.

With a 17.6kwh battery pack, the smart has a range of approximately 160 km (100 miles) – ideal for urban traffic with top speed limited 80mph and 60mph arriving in 12.7seconds.

Renault is the Europes Number one selling electric vehicle brand – selling more than 112,000 electric vehicles worldwide since 2011, including the Renault ZOE, Kangoo Z.E., Fluence Z.E., the SM3 Z.E. and the Twizy. An additional affordable model will continue its dominance.

Fingers crossed I am right……. a budget EV could just be what the market needs.
